Help & Troubleshooting

Please look at the pictures and descriptions below.  They will help you connect all of the equipment (computer, SMART Board, phone, etc.) in your room.  Many computers in the district look different from one another, but just about all of the ports & connections are the same (and will look the same).  (Click on the pictures for a larger view.)

Computer Ports & Connections

1 Serial port (rarely used) – You will not use this port.

2 Printer port (rarely used) – You will not use this port.

3 VGA/video port – You will connect a VGA cable from this port to your video splitter if you have a SMART Board; if you do not have a SMART Board, connect the VGA cable from this port to your monitor.

4 PS/2 keyboard port (rarely used) – If your keyboard has a purple PS/2 (circular) connector on the end of its cable, you will plug that into this port.  Otherwise, you will not use this port.

5 PS/2 mouse port (rarely used) – If your mouse has a green PS/2 (circular) connector on the end of its cable, you will plug that into this port.  Otherwise, you will not use this port.

6 Microphone input port – If you use a microphone, you will connect it to this port.

7 Speaker/audio output port – You will connect a 1/8″ or 3.5mm audio cable from this port to either the wall plate (if you have a SMART Board with ceiling speaker), or to your desktop speakers.  If you do not have desktop speakers or a SMART Board with ceiling speaker, you probably will not use this port; your speaker may be internal to your computer tower.  Also, you may plug headphones into this port.

8 Line input port (rarely used) – You will not use this port.

9 USB ports – Several devices and peripherals use USB ports for connectivity.  You will connect your USB extender (for the SMART Board, if you have one in your room) to any of these ports.  Also, most keyboards and mice now use USB connectors, so you will plug those into these ports.  Printers, scanners, cameras, etc. can also be connected to these ports if the devices allow for it.

10 LAN/network port – You will connect a network/data/LAN/CAT5/CAT5E cable from this port to the PC port on the back of your phone.  If you do not have a phone in your room, you will connect the network/data/LAN/CAT5/CAT5E cable directly to the data port on the wall plate.  (See below for additional pictures and information.)

Wall Plate Connectors for SMART Board

1 RCA inputs – You will connect an RCA cable from the output of your VCR/DVD player to this port to show VCR tapes/DVDs on your SMART Board.  (Yellow connector is for video; white and red connectors are for audio.)

2 Connector for USB extender – You will connect your USB extender (for your SMART Board) to this port.  (One end of the USB extender will be plugged into any available USB port on your computer (See #9 above); the other end of the extender, a network cable, will be plugged into this port.)

3 Speaker/audio input port – You will connect an 1/8″ or 3.5mm audio cable from the audio output port on your computer (See #7 above) to this port.  This will send sound from your computer to either the ceiling speaker or projector speaker.

4 Coax cable input – You will connect a coax cable from the coax output port on the back of your VCR/DVD player to this input port to view cable TV channels on your SMART Board.

5 VGA input – You will connect a VGA cable from the output of your VGA splitter (See item #9 below) to this port to view your computer screen on your SMART Board.

Phone Connections & Wall Jacks

1 We use a VOIP phone system in the district.  Your phone will not need an A/C power adapter as it will get its power from the network cable that connects from your phone to the wall jack.  If plugged into the correct jack, your phone lights will come on.

2 This is what the back of your phone looks like.  The left port that the black network cable is plugged into is the LAN port.  The other end of this cable will go into the data jack on the wall (See #3 to the left).  The middle port that the blue network cable is plugged into is the PC port.  The other end of this cable will go into the back of your computer’s LAN/network port (See #10 above).  The right port that the other (smaller) black cable is plugged into is the Handset port.  Your phone’s handset will be plugged into this port.

3 More often that not, the port that the phone should be plugged into is the left port on the wall plate.  If you plug the phone’s network cable into a port on the wall plate and the phone does not light up, try another port on the wall plate.  As soon as you see the lights on the phone light up, then you know you’ve chosen the correct port.

4 Most wall plates will have 1-2 data ports and some will have voice ports.  Do not plug your phone’s network cable into the voice port.  We no longer use the voice ports for anything in the district.
